Matilda Dixon

As an emerging artist based in Melbourne, I, Matilda Dixon, work primarily in oil paint and mixed media.

Raised in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, I am drawn to personal histories, local environments, and the narratives embedded within everyday life. I’m interested in the strange, the hidden, and the sometimes problematic moments that shape our lives, as well as the quiet beauty we often don’t take appreciation for until it’s gone.

For myself Painting is the act of discovering and learning, better understanding people, knowledge and the spaces I am in. My works are created out of conversation, observation, learning and questioning. Painting to me is another way of thinking more emotionally about my observations.

Painting from observation and photographic reference, I primarily work through portraiture and depictions of architectural space. By combining expressive brushwork, layered surfaces, and a balance of traditional and non-traditional techniques, I create works that sit between abstraction and realism.

Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Fine Arts, I aim to investigate how moments, places, and relationships can be preserved, transformed, and reimagined through paint.
